When it comes to a light rum that is to be used in mixed drinks, you can get by with spending less money, if you choose. But, when it comes to the darker rums, you really can taste the difference. Light brown rum has a much less distinctive smokey molasses taste and is best used for mixing in fruit drinks such as daiquiris or used in drinks such "rum and coke". Darker rums and aged rums are best served straight over ice.
