Santi Valpolicella Solane Wine. In the western Veneto, near Verone, the cooler temperatures surrounding the Alpine Foothills provide an ideal climate for producing the regions most notable reds from the Corvina grape, primarily Amarone and Valpolicella. Made in the Ripasso method, the 2008 Santi “Solane” Valpolicella is in theory a “baby Amarone”, made from a blend of Corvina and Rondinella grapes that sees secondary fermentation. Brick red in color, this is warm and inviting on the palate, with flavors of black cherry and vanilla dominating. Full bodied with a clean finish, this is begging for pasta and pizza. Mangia!

Santi Winery
Carlo Santi established his winery way back in 1843 in Italy’s Northeast Veneto, one of the three regions that make up the Tre Venezie, or Three Venices. Today the estate is still devoted to making classic examples of signature wines of the region, and we’ve selected one white and one red for this issue of Behind The Vine. Both staple wines of the Veneto, the Santi Pinot Grigio and Santi Valpolicella “Solane” are sourced from some of the region’s oldest vineyards, hand picked from estate grown fruit.
