It doesn’t surprise me that J.Lohr won a recent “2010 American Winery of the Year Award” from Wine Enthusiast magazine. It surprises me even less that J. Lohr continues to deliver California’s most notable and consumed varietals at very reasonable prices. The J. Lohr story began in 1972 when Jerry “J” Lohr began purchasing cool wind swept vineyards in the Monterey region of California. Later, he acquired warmer vineyards in the Paso Robles region. Seven Oaks is one of the classic J.Lohr Estate wines, made of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon. What’s different here is that this Cabernet is mostly from J. Lohr’s Seven Oaks estate vineyard, one of Paso Robles top vineyard plots. It’s not often (almost impossible really) you find a wine at this price that’s a single vineyard designate, obviously an indicator of the quality of the wine. The same quality control standard is practiced on his Chardonnay, which has been a staple Chardonnay on the shelf for over 20 years.
